Section 106 Compliance

The potential physical suicide deterrent system alternatives that are developed must satisfy applicable state and federal requirements regarding projects that impact historic resources. The historic section of an environmental document (EIR/EA) reports on the cultural and historic resources in the vicinity of the alternatives, along with the governing federal, state, and local legislation. The Golden Gate Bridge is considered an historic property, primarily because it was determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their activities and programs on historic properties. The environmental document will include a Section 106 evaluation that will inform the decision-making process for the alternatives.
